About this scholarship
Benefit
This grant supports students writing a diploma thesis or doctoral dissertation at an Austrian university or university of applied sciences. Individual awards reach up to 2,000 euros per project. The total budget per call is 5,000 euros, so the number of grants per round depends on the quality and number of applications received. Half the grant is paid when the award is made; the other half is paid after you submit your approved thesis. Documented travel costs for research within Austria can also be covered. The funding period is 12 months for diploma theses and 24 months for dissertations, with a possible extension of up to 6 months on request.
Eligibility
You can apply if you meet all of the following:
- Enrolment: You are enrolled at an Austrian university or university of applied sciences.
- Degree level: You are writing a diploma thesis or a doctoral dissertation.
- Subject area: Your thesis topic falls within Healing Environment or Patient Centered Care - meaning it examines how non-clinical factors (such as communication, human attention, the physical environment or distraction) affect patient recovery, psychological wellbeing or satisfaction.
- Relevant discipline: Your field is medicine, psychology, sociology, communication science, health communication, nursing science, architecture or a comparable discipline.
- Supervision: You have a university supervisor who will co-sign your project outline.
How to apply
The last known application deadline was 5 October. Submit the following documents:
- A project outline of up to 3 pages, co-signed by your university supervisor

- A work schedule showing how you plan to complete the thesis within the funding period
Send your application to Verband der Privatkrankenanstalten Österreichs, Domgasse 4/9, 1010 Vienna, or by email to stipendium@privatkrankenanstalten.at. The association checks applications for formal and academic suitability, then forwards shortlisted ones to its board for the final decision. You will hear back within two months of the deadline.
If you receive a grant, you must acknowledge the association as funder in your thesis and any publications, provide one copy of the finished work, and be available for a brief exchange with an association representative.
