SWEA International literature scholarship

You will receive a one-off research grant of about 13,800 EUR (15,000 USD) to help you complete your doctoral thesis. This is not a monthly scholarship, but a one-off lump sum. Please use this to cover costs such as visits to archives and your final year of writing. The grant covers a period of 12 months and is awarded once a year by SWEA International, a Swedish networking organisation based in the USA. Your research must focus on the Swedish language, literature or culture.

Who can apply

• Study phase: You are a PhD student and are in the final stages of your thesis; your topic has already been registered.
• Research topic: Your thesis focuses on the Swedish language, literature or culture.
• Where you study: Your university is located outside Sweden.
• Residence: You live outside Sweden.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities and all genders.
• Language: You speak and write Swedish well.
• Willingness to present: You are willing to give talks on your research to SWEA members in Sweden and abroad, and to take part in SWEA live webinars (online talks).
• No SWEA link: Neither you nor any close relative were members of SWEA in the three years prior to your application.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form on the SWEA International website. The application period runs from 15 September to 15 January. An independent panel will assess all projects, and the winners will be notified in March.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is aimed at a narrowly defined target group: PhD students who are nearing completion of their thesis on Swedish language, literature or culture, who are studying outside Sweden and who are fluent in Swedish. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate a compelling, nearly completed project, your chances are good. Please note that only one scholarship is awarded each year and the selection panel may decide not to award it if no suitable candidate applies.
