UEA Bursary (Undergraduate Bursary Scheme)

What the UEA Bursary gives you

You get a cash payment each year of your undergraduate studies at the University of East Anglia (UEA), for up to four years. There are two levels. If your household income is £20,000 or less per year, you receive £1,600 per year (about EUR 1,900). If you are a care leaver or estranged from your family, you receive £3,000 per year (about EUR 3,550). "Care leaver" means you spent time in the care of a local authority. "Estranged" means you have no supportive contact with your parents. The money is paid in three instalments each academic year. You can hold this bursary on top of a UEA scholarship, but you cannot combine two bursaries.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled on an undergraduate course at UEA, including one with a Foundation Year. The Foundation Year counts as one of your four funded years.
• Nationality: You are a UK student and pay tuition at the home rate. Students from the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and international students are not covered.
• Tuition loan: You qualify for a Tuition Fee Loan from your national student finance body.
• Income (for the £1,600 bursary): Your household income is £20,000 per year or less, as assessed by student finance. This is your parents' income if you depend on them, or your own income if you are independent.
• Care leaver or estranged (for the £3,000 bursary): You are 24 or younger when you enrol, and student finance confirms you as a care leaver or as estranged from your family.
• Field of study: Any undergraduate subject.

How to apply

There is no application form. UEA checks your eligibility automatically using the household income data your student finance body sends. If you qualify, the university contacts you shortly after you complete your initial course registration, from the September your course starts.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competition. If you meet the income or care-experience conditions, you receive the bursary, so there is no selection panel to convince. What decides it is whether your assessed household income is at or below £20,000, or whether student finance has recorded you as a care leaver or estranged. Make sure your student finance application is complete and accurate, because UEA relies on that data.
