What you get

You get an interest-free loan of up to 200 EUR per month, paid for up to five years. It works in your favour: the loan turns into a grant you never repay if you work for three years at a VDEh member or partner company after your studies. On top of the money you get travel grants for internships at steel companies abroad, personal contacts to industry firms in Germany and abroad for internships, research projects and theses, discounts on technical books and journals, a free subscription to the magazine stahl+eisen, and access to the network of steel engineers. The funder is the Stahlinstitut VDEh in Düsseldorf, the German steel industry association, which has supported young scientists since 1970.

Who can apply

• Membership: You are a member of the Stahlinstitut VDEh.
• Field of study: You study an engineering or natural-science subject linked to steel, such as materials technology, metallurgy, materials science or steel process engineering.
• Career plan: You intend to work in a steel company after your studies.
• Nationality: German and international students can apply, as long as you qualify under German student-aid rules (§ 8 (2) BAföG).

How to apply

Apply in two steps: a written application, then a personal interview. The VDEh scholarship committee decides after the interview. Apply by 31 January for the summer semester or by 31 July for the winter semester.
