About this scholarship
What the contract gives you
You get a full-time, paid predoctoral research contract at the University of Seville to write your PhD thesis in one of its research groups. The University budgets about 30,230 EUR per year in total cost per contract for years 1 to 3, rising to about 31,870 EUR in year 4. This figure includes the employer's social security contributions and an end-of-contract payment, so your gross salary is lower than the full amount. Your pay is set by law and grows over time. It cannot drop below 56% of the collective-agreement salary in years 1 and 2, 60% in year 3 and 75% in year 4, and never below the Spanish minimum wage. The University also pays your social security registration and the supervision fees for enrolling in a doctoral programme. The contract runs for at least 1 year and can be renewed each year up to 4 years in total (6 years if you have a disability). After finishing your PhD you may add a postdoctoral period of up to 6 months. It is funded by the University of Seville's VII Research and Transfer Plan (VII PPIT-US), which awards up to 30 of these contracts.
Who can apply
- FPU 2024 applicant: You took part in the national FPU 2024 call, the Ministry's grant scheme for training university teaching staff (published 4 January 2025). Your project, title and supervisor here must match exactly what you put in that FPU application.
- Evaluation record: You can show your FPU 2024 evaluation with the detailed score, project title and supervisor's name. That score decides your ranking.
- Where you study: You do your PhD in a doctoral programme at the University of Seville.
- No doctorate yet: You do not already hold a PhD.
- Prior contracts: You have not held a predoctoral contract for more than one year.
- Supervisor: A University of Seville doctor from a research group agrees to direct your thesis.
- Field of study: Open to all five branches of knowledge; contracts are shared out evenly between them.
- Nationality: All nationalities can apply. Non-EU applicants need a Spanish foreigner ID (NIE) when signing the contract; EU citizens need an EU registration certificate.
How to apply
You apply online through the University's application manager and then register the generated document through the official registry, by 15 September 2025. You must attach a thesis project outline of no more than 10 pages. Leaving it out means automatic exclusion and cannot be fixed later. Within each branch of knowledge, applicants are ranked by their FPU 2024 score.
How realistic are your chances?
This is a narrow, targeted scheme. You must already have entered the national FPU 2024 call, secured a Seville supervisor, and match your earlier application exactly, so only a small, self-selected pool competes. With up to 30 contracts split evenly across five fields and ranked purely by your FPU score, a strong FPU evaluation is what decides it. If you clearly meet the conditions and score well, your prospects are solid.
