About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive between 8,000 EUR per year and 3 years, totalling 24,000 EUR, for the completion of your doctoral thesis (PhD) at the University of the Aegean in Greece. The money is tax-free under Greek law. You may use it to cover research costs such as laboratory materials, travel to conferences or seminars. The amount is fixed and cannot be increased. It comes from the university’s own research fund, not from external donors. The aim is to promote basic research and attract talented young researchers.
Who can apply
- Degree level: You are a PhD student at the University of the Aegean. You are either already in the first year of your PhD programme or have been admitted to a department there within the last two months.
- Supervisor: You have a supervisor at the University of the Aegean and should state their name in your application.
- Field of study: One prize is awarded per department. The most recent calls for applications covered departments such as Mathematics and Education (Social Sciences). You can check the current call for applications to see which departments are eligible this year.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. You must hold a degree from a recognised university or university of applied sciences, whether in Greece or abroad.
- No other income: You are not employed in either the public or private sector. You do not receive any further funding for your dissertation, either in Greece or abroad.
How to apply
Each year, the University advertises the YPATIA scholarships and determines how many scholarships are to be awarded and how they are to be allocated amongst the individual departments. Applications must be submitted within two months of the call for applications being published. A research committee will assess your achievements: publications, previous scholarships, awards and similar accomplishments.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. Applicants must already be affiliated with the University of the Aegean, have a supervisor there, not be receiving any other funding, and their field of study must be one of the few listed in that year’s call for applications. This keeps the pool of applicants small, meaning that a well-suited candidate has a genuine chance of success. As only one scholarship is awarded per department, a strong research track record is crucial.
