Ahlqvist Foundation travel scholarship for a thesis abroad

You will receive your travel costs covered for writing your final thesis (examensarbete, worth 30 credit points) at a university outside Sweden in the field of pharmacy or pharmaceutical research. There is no fixed amount. The grant merely covers your actual, reasonable travel expenses – you must cover all other costs yourself, such as your living expenses and other outgoings. The funding comes from the Elisabeth and Alfred Ahlqvist Foundation, which is administered by the Apotekarsocieteten (the Swedish Chamber of Pharmacists). The payment is made directly to you, is tax-free, and is paid to you personally, not to your university.

Who can apply

• Your studies: You are studying Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences as part of a Bachelor’s degree programme.
• Where you study: A degree from a Swedish higher education institution is preferred, but is not a mandatory requirement.
• What you're doing: You intend to write your final dissertation, worth 30 credit points, at a university outside Sweden.
• Timing: The trip is presumably still to come. The scholarship is not awarded for a trip you have already undertaken.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
• Membership bonus: Membership of the Apotekarsocieteten is not required. However, if two applicants are equally qualified, preference will be given to members.

How to apply

You apply online via the Apotekarsocieteten scholarship portal, selecting the ‘Research and Science’ category. The application period runs from 1 September to 31 October for stays commencing on or after 1 January of the following year. You will need confirmation from your supervisor in your home country and confirmation from the host university abroad. A decision will be made within one to two months of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is awarded on a highly selective basis. You must be a student of pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences and be writing your dissertation abroad; consequently, the target group is small and competition is low. If you clearly meet these criteria and have your two letters of recommendation ready, your chances are good. Membership of the Apotekarsocieteten only counts as a deciding factor in the event of a tie; therefore, a solid, well-documented plan is more important.
