Sixten Gemzeus Scholarship

You will receive a scholarship for one academic year (from 1 July to 30 June) to study or conduct research abroad. In the past, individual grants have amounted to up to up to about 250,000 SEK (approx. 22,000 EUR). The exact amount is determined on a case-by-case basis and depends on your project. The funding is provided by the Sixten Gemzéus Foundation, a Swedish foundation administered jointly with the Gålö Foundation. Each year, the two foundations distribute around 5,000,000 SEK amongst their scholarship holders, and the Sixten Gemzéus Foundation awards up to 10 scholarships. Past scholarship holders have attended institutions including King’s College London, Cambridge, Harvard, the Juilliard School and the Royal College of Music.

Who can apply

• Where you go: You are studying or conducting research abroad, not in Sweden.
• Degree already earned: You have obtained an initial academic qualification (180 ECTS, a Swedish degree at Bachelor’s level) prior to applying.
• Level: PhD students (who are working on their doctoral theses) have priority, followed by Master’s students. This also applies to artistic or practice-oriented degree programmes, in which a PhD is relatively rare.
• Age: You are 32 or younger.
• Value to Sweden: Your degree programme provides knowledge that is relevant to Sweden and includes content that you cannot study adequately in Sweden.
• Where you live: You can apply from anywhere in Sweden.
• Full year: Applications must be submitted one full academic year in advance. Scholarships will not be awarded retrospectively.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Gålö Foundation’s website, where you will first need to create an account. The application period for the following academic year runs from 5 November to 12 January. Letters of recommendation may be submitted separately by 1 February.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. Applicants must hold a university degree, have secured a place at a university abroad, and have a study plan that clearly benefits Sweden and cannot be carried out in their home country; as a result, the pool of eligible candidates is small. With up to 10 scholarships per year and substantial individual grants, well-suited applicants have a genuine chance of success. The decisive factor is a convincing, concrete plan of public interest, particularly at doctoral level.
