What the Skin Foundation Research Grant offers

You will receive a research grant for a project in the field of dermatology and venereology at a Swedish university. The grants each run for 1, 2 or 3 years. Dermatology and venereology refer to the medical study of skin diseases and sexually transmitted infections. The foundation does not disclose a fixed amount per project. As a guide to the scale of funding: In the year 2025, the three affiliated foundations that make up Hudfonden paid out a total of just over 19 million SEK (about 1.7 million EUR), thereby funding 30 projects, of which 14 were multi-year projects. Hudfonden is Sweden’s largest charitable foundation for skin research.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You hold a PhD. This vacancy is not open to students; Master’s students are not eligible to apply.
• Where you work: You are employed by, or officially attached to, a department of dermatology and venereology at a Swedish university.
• Field: Your project relates to dermatology or venereology. Funding is available for both clinically oriented and basic research projects.
• Who manages the money: The funding must be administered by a Swedish higher education institution.
• One project rule: You may only act as the lead applicant for one project per year.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. What matters is your connection to a Swedish higher education institution, not your passport.

How to apply

You apply online via the portal at hudfonden.se. The portal opens on 1 March, and the application deadline is 31 March each year. An international panel of researchers specialising in dermatology and venereology, together with Swedish reviewers, will assess each application in terms of originality, scientific quality, feasibility and your track record. Decisions will largely be made by the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility criteria are narrowly defined: applicants must hold a doctoral degree and have a formal affiliation with a department of dermatology and venereology at a Swedish university. Consequently, the pool of applicants is small and highly specialised. Applications are received from each of these departments across the country, and the projects are compelling, resulting in genuine competition amongst the qualified candidates. If you clearly meet the specialist field and affiliation criteria, a compelling, feasible project with a solid track record has good prospects. In the case of funding for project continuation, a well-documented progress report carries significant weight.
