What the Herbert & Karin Jacobsson Foundation grant gives you

You will receive a grant to help fund your studies following your A-levels, i.e. at university or university of applied sciences level. The foundation does not specify fixed amounts. Instead, the amount of each grant is determined on a case-by-case basis, taking your financial situation into account. This is means-tested supplementary funding, meaning that your income, assets, debts and any additional costs will determine the amount of the grant. The foundation was established in 1947 in Gothenburg and supports education, doctoral research and charitable work.

Who can apply

• Level: You are studying at a university or university of applied sciences after completing your A-levels.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Where you study: You are studying in Gothenburg. As a general rule, only applications from the Gothenburg area will be considered.
• Studying in Sweden: You are studying in Sweden. The foundation has little or no funding to support study abroad, such as an academic year in the USA.
• Financial need: You are unable to fund your studies from your own resources. In your application, you must provide a full account of your financial circumstances and those of your spouse or partner: income, assets and debts.
• Extra costs: An illness, a disability or social circumstances may result in additional costs that are not covered by state benefits. These will be taken into account in your favour. A certificate from a doctor or social worker is helpful in this regard.
• Delays from switching subject: You will not receive any financial support if your studies have been extended because you have changed your subject or course of study and have consequently lost your entitlement to the state student grant (CSN).

How to apply

You apply for the grant online via the SEB grant portal using BankID (the Swedish digital identity system). There are two application deadlines each year: from 1 March to 20 April, and from 15 September to 1 November. Please enclose a copy of your most recent tax return or tax assessment notice. The committee meets in May and November. You will only receive a response if your grant application is successful.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is very narrowly defined. You must be undertaking post-secondary education in Gothenburg and demonstrate a genuine financial need, which means that the group of people eligible for the grant is small. If you clearly meet these conditions and provide comprehensive documentation of your financial situation, your prospects are good. They are particularly good if you incur additional costs due to an illness or disability that are not covered by state support. A clear, well-documented case is more important than a sophisticated one.
