What the Marie Nisser fund gives you

You will receive a research grant for work on Swedish mining or industrial history. The amount of the grant varies from year to year, as it is funded from the fund’s annual investment returns. In one of the last few years, the fund paid out approximately 40,000 SEK (around 3,600 EUR). The grant is administered by Jernkontoret, the Swedish Steel Association. It uses the estate bequeathed by Professor Marie Nisser (1937–2011) to support young researchers in this field.

Who can apply

• Career stage: You are a young researcher, ideally enrolled at a university or college.
• Field of study: You are interested in mining history (Bergshistoria) or industrial history.
• Your project: Your research is of national interest to Sweden.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via Jernkontoret’s online form. There are two application deadlines each year: 15 February and 15 October. Jernkontoret’s Board will decide on the funding at its next meeting.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is aimed at a small target group: young researchers who specialise in Swedish mining or industrial history. There are very few applicants. If your research project clearly fits into this niche and is of national significance, your chances are good. Please note, however, that the amount awarded depends on the fund’s annual returns, so the grants tend to be modest rather than substantial.
