King Carl XVI Gustaf's 50th Anniversary Fund Grant

You will receive a one-off grant of 100,000 SEK (about 8,800 EUR). This is intended to support forward-looking projects, such as testing new ideas or establishing new collaborations, ideally across borders. Completed research projects are not eligible for funding. The fund is administered by a committee chaired by the King, in conjunction with the three Swedish Royal Academies: the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Agricultural Sciences (KSLA). Each year, around 15 to 20 grants are awarded at a ceremony held at the Royal Palace in Stockholm.

Who can get it

• Degree: You have a PhD. PhD students are only selected in rare cases.
• Career stage: As a rule, no more than six years have passed since you defended your doctoral thesis.
• Where you work: You work in Sweden. You can select individuals, groups, organisations or companies.
• Field: All subject areas are open, but your work must have a clear link to the environment. It must contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of biodiversity. This is a mandatory requirement.
• Type of work: Innovative work, work that serves as a model (for example, in industry), or work that breaks new ground will have a positive impact on your assessment.
• Not for you if: You are an established professor carrying out routine academic work, or you wish to receive recognition for work you have already completed. You cannot nominate yourself.

How it works

You cannot apply yourself. Each year, members of the academies, as well as individuals from the fields of research, technology or business, put forward candidates. A nomination for the Agricultural Sciences section (KSLA) must be submitted to the Academy by email by 9 January 2026. It must include a brief statement of reasons, details of the candidate’s environmental relevance, a plan for the use of the funds, and a CV with a list of publications.

How realistic are your chances?

As you cannot apply directly, it is best to ensure that someone who can nominate you is familiar with your work. The pool of eligible candidates is small: younger researchers based in Sweden with a clear link to the environment. With 15 to 20 grants awarded each year, a well-structured, forward-looking application stands a real chance of success. Applications seeking recognition for work that has already been completed are generally rejected.
