What the Mats Klebergs grants fund

You will receive a grant for one of two purposes: medical research into heart and lung diseases, or projects relating to childcare or the provision of teaching and education. The Swedish Mats Kleberg Foundation (Mats Klebergs Stiftelse) awards these grants once a year. The foundation does not publish fixed amounts. The foundation’s board decides on each grant on a case-by-case basis. Previous recipients include the Karolinska Institute, Lund University, Swedish regions and children’s charities such as BRIS and Rädda Barnen. The family established the foundation in 2001 in memory of Mats Kleberg, who died of heart cancer in 1999 at the age of 26.

Who can apply

• Pick one of two tracks: You are applying either for research into heart and lung diseases, or for a project that supports children or is involved in teaching and education.
• Care and education projects: Only organisations may apply; private individuals may not. The applicant must be a charity, a school or a similar organisation.
• Research grants: These are awarded to universities, hospitals and research institutions. The lead applicant must enclose a curriculum vitae, including a list of publications, and an approved application for ethical approval.
• Field of research: The research focus is limited exclusively to heart and lung diseases. The teaching focus is open to a wide range of projects in the fields of education and child development.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. In practice, the funded work takes place in Sweden.

How to apply

You apply online via the Foundation’s portal once you have created an account (which is operated by SEB Bank). The application period runs each year from 1. January to 15 March, from 23:59, and applications are only accepted once a year. You select your degree programme on the form and complete all the mandatory fields before submitting your application.

How realistic are your chances?

This is institutional funding rather than a personal scholarship. Your chances therefore depend on whether you fall within one of the two narrowly defined funding areas: heart and lung research at a research institution, or a childcare or educational project run by an organisation. As a private individual, you are only eligible for the research area via an institution. Applicants who clearly meet one of the focus areas, can provide evidence of this with the required documents, and submit their application before the deadline on 15 March have a good chance of success, as the funding is restricted to specific institutions and purposes.
