Södertörns högskola - Minor Field Studies (MFS)

What you get

You receive a 25,000 SEK (about 2,200 EUR) scholarship to carry out a field study abroad and collect material for your thesis. This is part-funding meant to cover travel, accommodation, vaccinations and your visa. You top it up with your regular student finance. The field study runs for at least 8 continuous weeks (56 days) and up to 20 weeks in one host country. That country must be a low- or middle-income country where Sweden runs development cooperation. The money comes from Sida, Sweden's development agency. The programme is coordinated nationally by Stockholms universitet, while Södertörns högskola decides on its own applicants.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at bachelor's or master's level at Södertörns högskola when you apply.
• What you do with it: You use the field study to gather material for a degree thesis at bachelor's, magister or master's level, written in English.
• Field of study: Open to all subjects, from humanities and social science to natural science, engineering and medicine.
• The topic: Your study must link to Swedish development cooperation or humanitarian aid and fit one of Sweden's development strategies for the host country.
• Nationality or residence: You are a Swedish citizen or hold a permanent residence permit (PUT) in Sweden.
• Language: You have good English skills.
• No repeat funding: You have not received an MFS scholarship before for the same study level.
• Not a doctoral student: You have not started any doctoral (research-level) education.

How to apply

You apply by email with the required forms: a confirmation from your contact person in the host country, a confirmation from your department that includes a supervision commitment, and a budget plan with a project description. For the spring semester 2027, you can apply between 1 October and 30 October 2026. Applications are judged on academic grounding, method, feasibility, relevance to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how safely you have planned the field study.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligible group is narrow: you must study at Södertörns högskola, be at thesis stage, and design a study that genuinely connects to Swedish development cooperation. Nationally there are 300 scholarships a year, so a well-planned project with a secured supervisor and host-country contact has solid prospects. A clear, security-aware project description is what separates a fundable application from a vague one.
