About this scholarship

The Swedish Bank Research Foundation scholarship

As a PhD student, you will receive a personal scholarship of SEK 320,000 for up to one year (about 28,500 EUR). In addition, you will receive 75,000 SEK (approx. 6,700 EUR) for health, accident and pension contributions, as well as 30,000 SEK (approx. 2,700 EUR) for research costs. Postdoctoral researchers receive more: 500,000 SEK (approx. 44,500 EUR) as a personal grant, 100,000 SEK (approx. 8,900 EUR) for insurance and pension contributions, as well as 50,000 SEK (approx. 4,500 EUR) for research costs. These are the rates for the year 2025/2026. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees sets the amount for 2026/2027 at its spring meeting. If you are already receiving a scholarship, you may apply separately for additional research and travel expenses. The funding comes from the Bankforskningsinstitutet (BFI), which is run by the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) in Sweden.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are a PhD student. Postdoctoral researchers may also be considered.
  • Field: Her research focuses on the field of economics, particularly financial institutions and financial markets.
  • What counts: Your project will be assessed on the basis of its academic quality and its relevance to banks and other financial institutions.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • Recommendation: Your supervisor will send the letter of recommendation directly to the foundation before the deadline.

How to apply

Applications should be submitted by email to the Foundation’s administrative officer. Please send the application form, a recent CV and, where applicable, your academic work. The application deadline for the 2026 round is Friday, 10 April 2026. Your supervisor’s letter of recommendation must be received by this date.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is aimed at a narrowly defined target group: PhD students and postdoctoral researchers conducting finance-oriented economic research relating to the banking sector. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If your project clearly fits this theme and your supervisor supports you with a strong letter of recommendation, your chances are good. The most important factor here is a well-founded justification of the relevance of your research to financial institutions.
