What the Palme Scholarship gives you

You will receive a one-off grant to carry out a project. As an individual, you can receive up to 15,000 SEK (about 1,350 EUR). Organisations such as schools, clubs or associations can apply for up to 70,000 SEK (approximately 6,300 EUR) and, in rare cases, up to 100,000 SEK (approximately 9,000 EUR). The money is intended to fund a specific project, not to cover ongoing operating costs. It comes from the Olof Palme Memorial Fund, which was established in 1986 in memory of the assassinated Swedish Prime Minister. The fund awards between approximately 50 and 80 grants each year.

Who can apply

• Age: If you are applying as an individual, you must not be older than 30.
• Organisations: Groups may also apply, such as schools, cultural associations, trade unions, youth organisations and civil society movements.
• Your project: The project must be aimed primarily at young people or involve them. Its purpose must be international exchange, studies on peace and disarmament, combating racism and xenophobia, or promoting international understanding and collective security.
• Timing: The project must not have started yet. The planning may already be complete, but the actual work must still lie ahead.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities.
• Language: You must write your application in Swedish.

How to apply

Create an account on the fund’s website and submit the application form online in Swedish. There are two submission deadlines each year: on 20 March and on 20 September, at 23:59 on the last day of the deadline. The board meets in mid-May and mid-November respectively, and you will receive a response by email seven to eight weeks later.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a project grant with a narrowly defined focus: your project must relate to young people as well as to peace, anti-racism or international understanding. Applications that clearly fit these themes stand out in particular. As 50 to 80 grants are awarded each year and there are two rounds of applications, the chances of a well-tailored application being successful are quite realistic. A concrete, clearly defined project, written in clear Swedish and submitted before work begins, offers you good prospects.
