Kumlins travel scholarship (Uppsala University)

You get a travel grant to fund a study or research trip abroad connected to your work in the language sciences. The scholarship covers one or more trips in the current or the next two semesters. It pays costs such as flights, accommodation and a daily allowance. There is no fixed published amount; the university's scholarship office sets it for each recipient. The grant comes from the H Kumlins stiftelse, a foundation set up in 1932 and managed by Uppsala University, which pays out these travel grants once a year.

Who can apply

• Position: You are a docent (a senior academic rank above doctorate) at Uppsala University.
• Field of study: You work in a language-science subject, so linguistics or a related language discipline.
• Your trip: You have a planned study or research trip abroad, with a purpose, dates and a cost breakdown.
• University link: You are affiliated with Uppsala University.

How to apply

You apply through Uppsala University's central scholarship system at stipendier.uu.se, logging in with your university account. For the autumn 2026 round, you can apply from 21 August to 11 September 2026, with the window closing at 17:00. The decision comes in November 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut very narrowly: you must be a docent in the language sciences at one specific university, so only a small group can apply. If you fit those conditions and submit a clear trip plan with a documented cost breakdown, your prospects are good. The foundation pays out a substantial sum each year, which further eases the competition within this small field.
