About this award / prize

The Golden Moose Prize (Guldälgen)

You will receive a prize of 20,000 SEK (about 1,770 EUR) and a bespoke glass sculpture. The prize is awarded to the person who has made the greatest contribution to raising awareness of wildlife collisions in Sweden, or who has been involved in measures to prevent them. The prize is awarded once a year by the Älgskadefondsföreningen (Association for the Moose Damage Compensation Fund). This Swedish charity has been working since 1973 to reduce the number of collisions between vehicles and wild animals. The award is presented at the Road Safety Conference in Tylösand, Sweden’s largest event of its kind.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You can apply as an individual, an organisation, a company or a public authority. This is not a scholarship for students.
  • What you did: You have raised awareness of road accidents involving wildlife or helped to prevent them. This could be a project idea or a project that has already been completed.
  • How recent: A completed project must not be more than 3 years old.
  • Field: Any field of activity is relevant, provided it relates to road safety for wildlife.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, but the prize focuses on road safety for wildlife in Sweden.

How to apply

Send a written application by post or email to the Älgskadefondsföreningen in Växjö. The association's board reviews all applications and decides who wins.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an annual award given in recognition of a very specific contribution. A deserving winner is selected from among all those who are committed to wildlife road safety. If you have a specific, current project or an idea that demonstrably reduces the number of collisions between animals and vehicles, a well-documented application stands a real chance of success. A vague connection to the topic is not sufficient, as only one prize is awarded each year.
