Lundberg Foundation doctoral scholarship

You receive 29,500 SEK per month (about 2,600 EUR), tax-free in Sweden, for up to 12 months. Over a full year of full-time PhD work that adds up to 354,000 SEK (about 31,000 EUR). The money is paid monthly, goes to you personally and covers your living costs. If you study part time or only part of the year, the amount is reduced to match. The Lars Erik Lundberg Foundation supports PhD research in "Samhällsbyggnad" (society building): architecture, building technology, urban planning, housing and real estate management. It hands out roughly 10 to 15 scholarships a year in total, split between PhD students and postdocs.

Who can apply

• Level: You are working towards a full PhD (doktorsexamen). A licentiate degree does not qualify.
• Field: Your research is in architecture, building technology, urban planning, housing or real estate management.
• University: You study at a technical college or university in Sweden. You must be formally admitted as a doctoral student by the time of the first payment.
• Supervision: A university has already agreed to supervise you.
• No other funding: You have no employment contract, training grant or other research funding for your PhD. This scholarship is only for those without such support.
• Funding limit: Were you admitted after 30 June 2018? Then Swedish rules allow only the first of your four PhD years to be scholarship-funded, so 1 year at most. Were you admitted before 1 July 2018? Then the foundation can support you across all your PhD years, up to four years of full-time study in total.

How to apply

You apply through the foundation's online system (Researchweb), reachable from its website. For 2026 the window runs from 1 January to 9 February 2026 (23:59). Your supervisor must create an account and add a signed recommendation letter, and you attach your CV. A scientific committee reviews applications in spring, the board decides by mid-April, and you hear the result by email before the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is narrow: only PhD students in building and real estate fields at Swedish universities, without other funding, fit at all. That keeps the applicant pool small. With just 10 to 15 scholarships a year shared with postdocs, it stays competitive, and selection turns on how strong and practically useful your project is for the construction and property sector. If you clearly meet the criteria and present a solid research plan, your prospects are good.
