Söderberg Foundation research scholarship

You receive a personal scholarship to fund your doctoral or postdoctoral research for one year. You can apply to extend it after each year. As a full-time PhD student you get 465,000 SEK (about 41,000 EUR) in total: 360,000 SEK as a stipend (30,000 SEK per month), 90,000 SEK for insurance and 15,000 SEK for books and materials. If you already hold a doctorate (a postdoc), the standard funding covers 75% of a full-time position and totals 540,000 SEK (about 47,000 EUR) per year. A full-time postdoc package reaches 720,000 SEK (about 64,000 EUR). If a PhD project runs late, you can apply for a top-up of 20,000 SEK per month for up to 6 months. The money comes from the Johan och Jakob Söderbergs stiftelse, a foundation in Stockholm that funds research in economics, law, medicine, natural sciences and culture.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student (a doctoral candidate) or a researcher who already holds a doctorate (a postdoc).
• Field of study: For the 2027 round, this application route funds only economics and law. Medicine, natural sciences and culture are decided separately.
• Institution: You are attached to a university or research institute.
• Admission (PhD students): If you are not yet admitted to doctoral studies, you get the scholarship only once your institution accepts you onto the programme.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply. You log in to the application system with Swedish BankID or an email account.
• Not funded: Upper-secondary studies and non-research post-secondary studies get no support.

How to apply

You apply online through the foundation's portal. It opens on 15 December and closes on 1 February. Attach a project description of at most 5 pages and your CV. Decisions come by 31 May each year.

How realistic are your chances?

The 2027 round is narrow: only PhD students and postdocs in economics or law can apply, which keeps the applicant pool small compared with an open research grant. The foundation pays out around 3 to 4 million SEK a year, so the number of grants for these two subjects is limited. If you clearly fit the subject and level and submit a strong, focused project description, your prospects are good.
