Gösta Skoglunds Internationella Fond scholarship

This fund at Umeå University supports international exchange in regional science, the study of how economies, jobs and people develop across regions. It offers three types of support. If you write the best thesis, you receive a one-off prize of 10,000 SEK (about 870 EUR). Doctoral students and researchers can get a travel grant for international conferences, seminars and research visits abroad. Researchers can also get funding to invite foreign researchers to Umeå or to organise international symposia there. The fund is run by CERUM (Centrum för regionalvetenskap), the regional science centre at Umeå University. For the travel and invitation grants no fixed amount is set. Daily allowances and salary are never covered.

Who can apply

• University: You study or research at Umeå University.
• Field: Your work must have a clear link to regional science.
• Thesis prize: You wrote a bachelor's, magister or master's thesis in this field, passed it at your thesis seminar in the relevant academic year, and wrote it in Swedish or English.
• Travel grants: You are a doctoral student or researcher at Umeå University attending or organising international events.
• Individual only: You apply in your own name. Institutions cannot apply.

How to apply

Submit the application form to the fund committee by 31 January each year. For the thesis prize, you or your teacher or supervisor nominate the thesis by the same date. The committee reviews applications in the last week of February and informs applicants in March.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is narrowly targeted: you must be tied to Umeå University and to regional science, so few people compete for it. The thesis prize goes to just one work each year, which makes it competitive. The travel and invitation grants have no single winner, so a well-matched proposal has solid prospects. Showing a clear regional-science link is the main hurdle.
