Carl Tullus Memorial Scholarship for medical students

You receive a one-off award of 20,000 SEK (about 1,800 EUR). You can spend it on anything, but within one year you must send a short note on how you used it. The money comes from the Carl Tullus Minnesfond, a fund set up by the family of Carl Tullus. He was a medical student and doctoral researcher who died in an accident in 2006 at the age of 26. The award is given once a year, usually in December or January, at an online gathering that also serves as a reunion for past scholars.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You study at the Karolinska Institutet (KI) in Stockholm.
• Level: You are a medical student, or a doctoral researcher with a medical degree from KI.
• Not yet finished: You have not completed a doctorate (PhD). You have also not finished your AT, the supervised clinical training that Swedish doctors do after graduating.
• Research: You are actively involved in research. This is the main thing the committee looks for.
• Extra credit: Work in the student union (Medicinska Föreningen), other volunteering, or humanistic and social interests count in your favour.

How to apply

Fill in the online form and attach your CV and your answers to two set questions (each up to one A4 page): what your scientific curiosity has led to, and what drives you to invest in medical research. The deadline is 12 November. A selection committee led by Professor Rolf Kiessling, Carl's former supervisor, then chooses the scholar.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one scholar is chosen each year, and the award targets a narrow group: research-active medical students and pre-PhD doctors at a single institution, KI. That keeps the applicant pool small. Because the committee values genuine research engagement above all, a clear research record plus union or volunteer work, backed by thoughtful answers to the two questions, is what sets you apart.
