About this scholarship
Scholarship for Research on Swedish Alcohol Culture
You will receive a research grant of approximately 125,000 SEK (about 11,000 EUR). The exact amount varies: the museum allocates a total annual sum of 250,000 SEK (approximately 22,000 EUR) amongst one to three people. In recent years, the individual grant amounts have ranged from 50,000 SEK (approximately 4,400 EUR) to 150,000 SEK (approximately 13,200 EUR). In the year 2025, two researchers each received 125,000 SEK. The funds are used to support research into Swedish alcohol culture, with a focus on traditions, attitudes and drinking habits. Related subject areas are also eligible, such as media, the history of technology and production, or economics and politics. The grant is awarded by the Spritmuseum in Stockholm, which is run by the ‘Stiftelsen Vin & Sprithistoriska Museet’ foundation. A committee comprising historians and experts in food culture decides on the award.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a student, a doctoral candidate (PhD researcher) or a researcher who has already been awarded a doctorate.
- Research topic: Your project studies Swedish alcohol culture, for example its traditions, attitudes, drinking patterns, history, media coverage, production methods, economics or politics.
- Field of study: Any topic, provided your project relates to the research topic mentioned above.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Where you study: You can study at any university you like.
How to apply
Please submit your application by email to the museum’s contact person by 1 October. Your application must include a project description covering the background, objectives, methodology, timetable, relevance, planned dissemination of the results and references. Please attach a budget breakdown showing the amount requested. The committee may request further documentation.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding area has a narrow thematic focus: your project must deal with Swedish drinking culture, which means that the pool of applicants remains small compared to open research grants. If your application clearly fits this focus and is well thought out, your prospects are quite good. As only a handful of grants are awarded each year, a concise, compelling project description is crucial to setting yourself apart from other applicants.
