Ahlström and Terserus Foundation scholarship for women researchers

You get a tax-free scholarship of 300,000 SEK per year (about 26,000 EUR) if you are a doctoral student, or 350,000 SEK per year (about 30,000 EUR) if you already hold a doctorate. Doctoral scholarships run for 1 year. You can extend them by one year if you are early in your PhD. Post-doctoral scholarships run for 2 years. Your host department can also receive an extra 75,000 SEK per year (about 6,500 EUR) for a workspace and equipment. The scholarship also covers your own insurance costs. You may work alongside it, for example teaching, up to 20% of full time. The money comes from the Anna Ahlström and Ellen Terserus Foundation, awarded together with Stockholm University.

Who can apply

• Gender: Only women can apply.
• Field of study: You study or research in the humanities or social sciences at Stockholm University.
• Level: You are a doctoral student, or you have completed your doctorate at Stockholm University by 15 May of the application year. If you are only conditionally admitted to a PhD, this scholarship can be the condition for full admission.
• Where you work: As a post-doctoral researcher, you must be based at Stockholm University during the scholarship period.
• Timing (bonus): Priority goes to doctoral students early in their PhD, and to researchers who finished their doctorate less than 4 years ago.
• One per type: You cannot receive the same type of scholarship twice. You can hold the doctoral one first and the post-doctoral one later.

How to apply

You apply once a year through the university's online scholarship system, logging in with your university account. The application window normally runs from 15 March to 15 April. You attach a research plan of at most 2 pages plus a reference from your supervisor. Post-doctoral applicants also add a CV with publication list and a thesis abstract. A faculty review panel proposes candidates, and the foundation makes the final decision, usually at the end of June.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is cut narrowly: women only, in the humanities or social sciences, doing or having just finished a PhD at one specific university. So the eligible group is small. If you clearly fit those conditions and present a strong research plan with a supportive supervisor reference, your prospects are good. That is especially true early in your PhD or within 4 years of your doctorate, which the foundation prioritises.
