About this scholarship

ARQ joint thesis grant (examensarbetsbidrag)

You will receive a one-off payment of 50,000 SEK (about 4,400 EUR) for a joint final-year project in architecture and engineering. One scholarship is awarded each year. The funding comes from ARQ, a Swedish research foundation established by the architectural practice White arkitekter. ARQ supports practice-oriented research in the fields of architecture, urban planning and building design. The scholarship is intended to encourage architecture and engineering students to collaborate, so that each side gains a better understanding of the other’s field of expertise.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a student writing your final-year project (examensarbete) in architecture or engineering.
  • Teamwork is the core rule: The thesis must be written together by one student on an architecture programme and one student on an engineering programme. A solo thesis does not qualify.
  • Where you study: You’re studying in Sweden. Every higher education institution counts.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

The scholarship does not cover core undergraduate modules, study trips, materials or regular courses.

How to apply

Applications are accepted once a year; to apply, please email the application form to ARQ. The application deadline changes each year and is announced on the Foundation’s website. Applications are processed alongside the other ARQ funding rounds, and you will receive a written response within two months.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very limited: it is awarded only once a year, and it requires genuine collaboration between architecture and engineering in the final-year project – something most students do not have. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants remains small. If you have already arranged to undertake a joint final-year project with a partner from the other department, you will be competing against very few others, and your prospects are good.
