What you get

You receive a one-off scholarship of 30,000 to 90,000 SEK (about 5,300 EUR on average) for your music studies in Sweden. You can also use the money to buy an instrument or sheet music. The Royal Swedish Academy of Music (KMA) in Stockholm awards it. KMA runs around 110 scholarship funds and pays out 5 to 7 million SEK every year. You can win more than once, up to a lifetime total of 250,000 SEK (about 22,500 EUR) from KMA.

Who can apply

• What you do: You are an instrumentalist, singer, conductor, composer or instrument technician.
• Field: You work in Western art music, folk music, jazz or conducting.
• Where you study: You study full time at a Swedish college of music.
• Study level: You have started the second year of a Master's degree (or an equivalent graduate level). Or you are in an opera, jazz, folk music, choir-conducting or organ programme and have started at least your third Bachelor's year.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply. Swedish and international students apply through separate calls.
• One category: You can apply in only one category per year.
• Proof: You can document your studies or degree.

How to apply

You apply through the digital form on the KMA website by 20 May (23:59). There is a non-refundable application fee of 300 SEK. Most applicants then attend an in-person audition of 12 to 15 minutes in September or October. Composers instead send 2 to 3 works (about 15 minutes total) by 2 September. Results appear on the KMA website from mid-December.

How realistic are your chances?

The eligibility is narrow. You must already study at a Swedish college of music and have reached an advanced stage of your degree. So the pool is limited to serious music students in Sweden. If you fit those conditions and prepare a strong, varied audition, your prospects are reasonable. KMA spreads several million SEK across many funds each year rather than picking a single winner.
