University of the Arctic - North2north Programme

What you get

You will receive a scholarship of 19,000 SEK to 22,000 SEK (about 1,800 EUR) for a semester abroad at a partner university in the “north2north” network. Many partner universities in North America, the UK and Australia also waive tuition fees for “north2north” students, meaning you will be exempt from the tuition fees that would normally apply there. The programme is run by the University of the Arctic (UArctic), a network of around 70 universities across the Arctic region. The Swedish side funds outgoing students exclusively.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at one of the four Swedish universities: Luleå University of Technology, Mid Sweden University, Stockholm University or Umeå University. (Stockholm University is currently only accepting students who are due to commence their studies in the period 2026/27.)
• Study progress: You have completed your first year of study and passed all your exams.
• Where you go: You will spend one or two semesters at a partner university abroad. For Swedish students, possible destinations include the USA, Canada, Iceland, Finland, Norway, France, the United Kingdom and Australia.
• Field of study: All applicants are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to students studying subjects relating to the Arctic or the North, at least at Stockholm University.
• Level: Undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD students are welcome to apply.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at one of the four Swedish universities.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted between November and January via your home university in Sweden, following the standard procedure for study periods abroad. You should apply for both a scholarship and a tuition fee waiver. The north2north coordinator at your home university will grant the fee waivers by 20 February at the latest and will then put you forward to your host university abroad. You can find out the exact deadlines from the north2north coordinator at your university.

How realistic are your chances?

Each of the four Swedish universities awards only around 5 scholarships per semester, so places are limited. However, the pool of applicants is also small: you must already be studying at one of these four universities and have successfully completed your first year of study. If you meet these requirements, apply early in November and can demonstrate a connection to topics relating to the Nordic region, your chances are good.
