Research grants at the Swedish Institute at Athens

You will receive a scholarship (a financial grant) to carry out research in Athens on a topic relating to ancient or modern Greece. There are two scholarships available. The large grant is 45,200 SEK (approximately 4,000 EUR) for a four-month stay. This increases by 1,600 SEK (approximately 140 EUR) for each additional week, up to 50,000 SEK (approximately 4,400 EUR) for a stay of up to six months. The small grant provides 20,000 SEK (approximately 1,750 EUR) for a one-month stay. Both grants include accommodation in the Institute’s building in the centre of Athens. The scholarships are provided by the Swedish Institute in Athens, a research foundation funded by the Swedish government.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a Master’s student, a PhD student or a researcher who has already obtained a PhD. The major grant is primarily aimed at PhD students.
• Field of study: Your thesis should focus on ancient or modern Greek culture and society. Applicants from the Department of Classical Philology will be given preference, but the final decision will depend on the quality and relevance of the thesis.
• Nationality and university: You are studying or conducting research at a Swedish higher education institution, or you are a Swedish student or researcher working at a higher education institution abroad.
• Your project needs Greece: A stay in Greece is indeed necessary for your research, and you explain in your application why this is the case.
• Priority: If you have never received this scholarship before, you will be given priority over those who have already received it.

How to apply

Please email your application as a single PDF file to the Secretary of the Executive Board. For the spring round 2027, the application deadline is 10 April 2026. Your application should include a description of your research project, a research plan for the funding period, a statement explaining why you need to be in Greece, and your CV.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a highly targeted funding scheme. You must be a researcher with links to Sweden whose project genuinely requires a stay in Greece, specifically within a narrowly defined field of research relating to Greek culture and antiquity. This keeps the pool of applicants small. If you clearly meet these criteria and can demonstrate that your stay in Athens is well planned and necessary, your chances are good. A convincing, feasible research plan is crucial to the selection process.
