Sixten Gemzéus Foundation study-abroad scholarship

You will receive approximately 26,820 SEK (around 2,400 EUR) to fund a full academic year of study or research abroad. The year runs from 1 July to 30 June. The Sixten Gemzéus Foundation is part of the Gålöstiftelsen in Stockholm. It supports independent study placements outside Sweden. Your studies should generate knowledge that is of benefit to Sweden and which you would not readily be able to acquire at home. The Foundation gives priority to funding a full year at a foreign university, although exceptions may be made.

Who can apply

• Where you go: You are studying or conducting research abroad, outside Sweden.
• Degree: You have obtained a Bachelor’s degree (180 credits) or have equivalent practical training.
• Study level: First comes the PhD programme, followed by postdoctoral research and, finally, a Master’s degree (particularly in artistic or practice-oriented disciplines where PhD programmes are rare).
• Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
• Where you live: You can apply from anywhere in Sweden.
• Age: You are 32 or younger.
• Timing: Your application must relate to a full academic year that has not yet begun. You cannot receive funding for a period that has already begun.
• Study plan: Your proposed course of study is clearly in the public interest, and you can demonstrate that you possess outstanding personal qualifications for it.

How to apply

Applications are made online via the Gålöstiftelsen website. First, you will need to set up an account. The application period for the coming academic year runs from 5 November to 12 January. The results will be announced in May.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is aimed at a specific target group: postgraduate students under the age of 32 who have completed their degree and are planning a one-year stay abroad that will benefit Sweden. The pool of eligible applicants is therefore smaller than for open scholarships. PhD students are given priority; so if you meet this criterion and can present a convincing, socially relevant study plan, your chances are good. A clear, well-reasoned explanation of why your studies must take place abroad is more important than a flawlessly completed application form.
