About this award / prize

Brunel University Music Awards

You will receive free individual music lessons towards professional singing or instrumental tuition, up to ten hours per year, throughout your time studying at Brunel University London. This is not a cash payment. The university will cover the cost of your lessons, which are usually given by tutors who are already employed by the university. You will also have access to free lectures and masterclasses throughout the year, the opportunity to perform solo and in Brunel Arts ensembles, as well as social events for scholarship holders. The funding is valid for the duration of your studies, provided you continue to participate in the university’s musical life. If you cease to participate, the scholarship may be withdrawn.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You’re studying at Brunel University in London.
  • Degree level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
  • Field of study: Any subject. You don’t necessarily have to study music.
  • Your skill: You sing or play an instrument at approximately the level of Grade 7 of the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, a British music examination board) or at an equivalent level. You do not need to have passed the exam. For instruments or singing not examined by the ABRSM, a comparable standard is expected.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications should be sent by email to Brunel Arts. Please include your name, degree programme and year of study, details of your instrument or singing voice, your experience and a telephone number. You will then be invited to an audition. For the 2026/27 academic year, the application deadline is 25 September 2026, and the auditions will take place on 30 September 2026. Please apply as early as possible.

How realistic are your chances?

Only Brunel students who are already playing or singing at a level equivalent to approximately Grade 7 are eligible to apply, so the pool of eligible candidates is small. Several scholarships are awarded each year, and all subjects are eligible. So, if you clearly meet the required standard and perform well in the entrance exam, your chances are good. It is advisable to apply early, as the entrance exams take place shortly after the application deadline.
