The George Green Prize

You will receive a one-off cash prize of about 35 EUR (around £30), which is awarded once a year by the University of Nottingham. It is presented to the top student on the ‘Mathematical Physics’ undergraduate programme, and you can spend the money however you like. The prize is named after George Green (1793-1841), a self-taught mathematical physicist from Nottingham, whose work on electricity, magnetism and waves has shaped classical physics. The Department of Physics and Astronomy has been awarding it since 1979.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are studying for a Bachelor’s degree in ‘Mathematical Physics’ at the University of Nottingham.
• Results: You are the top student on this course. The prize is awarded for the best exam results.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

You do not apply for it yourself. The Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy nominates the winner, and the University Senate confirms the selection. In some years, the prize is shared amongst the students, and in years when no one meets the criteria, it is not awarded at all.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an annual award presented to the best student on a particular degree programme; the pool of candidates is therefore very small, but the standards are very high. No application is required: the prize is awarded solely on the basis of outstanding academic achievement in the Bachelor’s degree programme in ‘Mathematical Physics’. You should regard it more as recognition of outstanding achievement than as a source of funding, as the monetary value is modest.
