History Gibbs Prize (University of Oxford)

For achieving the highest average mark in the final examinations in History at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 885 EUR (£750). This is an award for academic achievement, funded by a donation from Charles D. D. Gibbs. The prize is awarded on the basis of academic merit rather than financial need. In addition, there are several smaller prizes in the subject of History: for example, 470 EUR (£400) for the runner-up, ten book prizes worth approximately 325 EUR (£275), as well as separate prizes for the Joint Schools, the Department of Art History and students admitted to Oxford under programmes designed to promote access to higher education. The next awards ceremony will take place in 2026.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Study phase: You are currently sitting your final exams (Final Honour School) for your Bachelor’s degree.
• Field of study: You’re studying history, as this prize is intended for history exams.
• Grades: You have the highest average mark of all the candidates. The examiners may decide not to award the prize in a given year if no one meets the necessary requirements.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

No application is required. The prize is awarded automatically on the basis of your academic performance and examination results.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single main prize awarded solely on the basis of examination results; consequently, only the very best A-level student in history wins it each year. It is not possible to apply for it or to campaign for it. All you need to do is achieve the highest average mark in your year group. Please regard it as recognition of outstanding achievement rather than financial support that you can factor into your plans.
