The Gilbert Ryle Prize

For the best overall performance on the BPhil programme in Philosophy, achieving a ‘Distinction’, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 580 EUR (£500). The BPhil is a two-year postgraduate programme in Philosophy at the University of Oxford. The prize is sponsored by the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford and has been awarded annually since 2008. In some years, it has been awarded to two students simultaneously.

Who can apply

• Degree: You are studying for a BPhil in Philosophy at the University of Oxford.
• Grades: In the BPhil examination, you will achieve the best overall result with a ‘Distinction’.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, without restriction.

How to apply

No application is required. The winner is selected automatically based on your BPhil examination results. The winner is announced every July following the examinations.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is awarded to the best individual BPhil student in each year group; therefore, you cannot apply for it or plan your studies with a view to winning it. It recognises the best examination results across the entire year group, which makes it a highly competitive prize. If you are already achieving outstanding results in your BPhil, you may well be awarded it on the basis of your results, but nobody can actively aim for it.
