Hicks/Webb Medley Prize

For the best overall performance in the economics examinations as part of your final degree examinations at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off award of about 360 EUR. This is an academic honour, not a monthly scholarship, and is awarded once for the results achieved in a single academic year. The prize is funded by the George Webb Medley Endowment Fund at the University of Oxford, the university’s leading prize fund for economics, politics and philosophy. It is named after the Nobel laureate Sir John Hicks. There is also a prize for the runner-up, the ‘Proxime Accessit Hicks/Webb Medley Prize’, awarded for the second-best performance.

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Degree level: You are a first-year student.
• Course: You are studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) or History and Economics (H&E).
• Grades: You achieved the highest overall mark in the economics exams as part of your final-year examinations (Final Honour School).
• Nationality: Open to students of all nationalities.

How to apply

No application is required. Examiners at the University of Oxford award the prize automatically each year on the basis of your final examination results.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single main prize awarded each year to the PPE or H&E student with the best results in economics; there is therefore only one winner and one runner-up. You cannot specifically aim to win it. The prize goes to the student who achieves the best results in that year’s final examinations. Think of it more as recognition for exceptional achievement rather than a source of funding on which you can base your plans.
