About this award / prize

George Webb Medley Undergraduate Thesis Prize

The prize for the best Bachelor’s thesis in Economics at the University of Oxford is worth approximately 180 EUR. The term ‘Bachelor’s thesis’ refers here to the in-depth research paper that you submit as part of your Bachelor’s degree examinations. The prize is funded by the University of Oxford’s George Webb Medley Fund and is awarded annually to one student from any of the economics degree programmes.

Who can apply

  • University: You are studying at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
  • Level: You are a Bachelor’s student and are working towards your first (Bachelor’s) degree.
  • Field of study: Your degree programme covers economics, for example Economics and Management, PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) or History and Economics.
  • Performance: You have written by far the best final-year dissertation in economics in your year group – across all degree programmes.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. Examiners from the Department of Economics at the University of Oxford will select the winner from among the papers submitted as part of the regular undergraduate examinations. By submitting your paper, you will automatically be entered into the selection process.

How realistic are your chances?

Only one student is awarded the prize each year, and the standard is very high. Submitting an application does not improve your chances, as the decision depends solely on how well your dissertation compares with those of the other entrants. In practice, therefore, this prize recognises outstanding achievement and is not something one can actively strive for.
