About this award / prize

Benefit

You will receive a one-off cash prize of about 378 EUR for outstanding achievement in the field of the New Testament in the original Greek. The Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Oxford awards this prize once a year. The amount of the prize is determined each year by the prize jury and may therefore vary. This is a one-off award for outstanding examination results and is not a monthly scholarship (a regular, ongoing payment).

Eligibility

  • Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Oxford.
  • Level: You are currently sitting your final exams – the final exams for a bachelor’s degree programme such as ‘BA in Theology and Religion’ or a related degree programme.
  • Subject: Your examinations will focus on the New Testament in the original Greek: translation, textual criticism and interpretation.
  • Performance: The examiners rate your performance in this area as excellent.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Once only: You cannot win the same prize more than once.

How to apply

You do not need to submit a separate application. The awards panel will automatically consider you on the basis of your final marks at the ‘Final Honour School’ and decides each year who will receive the prize. If no candidate is deemed good enough, the panel may decide not to award the prize. The relevant deadline each year is 28.02.

How realistic are your chances?

This prize is very narrowly defined. Only final-year Oxford students who are studying ‘New Testament Greek’ as part of a specific degree programme are eligible, so the pool of candidates is very small. Normally, only one student wins each year, and the prize is awarded to the student with by far the best performance in this subject. If you are studying ‘New Testament Greek’ at Oxford and achieving outstanding results, you are already in the running. Please note that it is the best examination results that are recognised here, not effort or a written application.
