What you get

You will receive a support package tailored to your sport, as well as possibly a cash payment or a reduction in your tuition fees. The cash payment can be up to 200 per year and is calculated on an individual basis. It is paid out in three equal instalments in December, March and May. The non-cash benefits include free membership of a sports club and a gym, strength and conditioning training in small groups, sports nutrition and sports psychology, physiotherapy, performance and lifestyle coaching, the official sports scholarship kit, and support in designing a flexible study timetable tailored to your training and competitions. The scholarship is valid for one academic year; to continue receiving it, you must therefore reapply each year. Nottingham Trent University (NTU) in England runs the programme for its student athletes.

Who can apply

• University: You are already studying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree at NTU, or you are applying for a place at NTU for next year, with NTU being your first choice.
• Sporting level: You take part in competitions at regional, national or international level, or show great potential for the future.
• Fitness: You are physically fit to take part in competitions in your sport. You must report any injury or illness that would prevent you from taking part in competitions.
• Priority sports: You will be given priority if your sport is part of ‘British Universities & Colleges Sport’ (BUCS), the UK’s inter-university competition system.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is welcome to apply.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

New applicants should complete the online application form. If you are already receiving the scholarship, please use a separate form to apply for renewal. A selection panel will decide on each individual application and notify you of the result by email.

How realistic are your chances?

Decisions on the award of the scholarship are made on a case-by-case basis, and the process is competitive; therefore, meeting the criteria does not guarantee a place. Your greatest asset is your sporting record: clear achievements at regional, national or international level, particularly in a BUCS sport, will set you apart from others. If you can demonstrate that you compete at a genuine competitive level and are willing to represent NTU, your prospects are good. You can also reapply in subsequent years if you were not successful the first time.
