Inger Lawrance Awards

You will receive a scholarship of about 158 EUR to support your studies in art history at University of Oxford for a period of up to 12 months. Two scholarships are awarded each year: one to a student in the Department of Art History and one to a student at the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford’s school of drawing and fine art. The scholarships were established by Stephen Lawrance in memory of his mother, the British-Danish artist and illustrator Inger Lawrance (1922–2005).

Who can apply

• University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
• Department: You are at the Institute of Art History or the Ruskin School of Art.
• Field of study: Their field of research is art history or fine art. Previous winners have also included PhD students (DPhil).
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is granted to very few people. Only students from two specific departments at Oxford are eligible, and as only two scholarships are awarded each year, the pool of eligible applicants is small. Admission to an art history degree programme at Oxford is the real hurdle. Once you are there, however, you have a genuine chance of success if you have a clear focus on art history. The scholarship may be awarded internally or on the basis of a nomination, rather than through an open call for applications.
