About this award / prize

John Hicks Foundation Prizes (E&M)

For the best examination results in the Department of Economics and Management (E&M) at the University of Oxford, you will receive a cash prize of about 120 EUR (£100). Three prizes are awarded each year, one each for the best result in microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative economics. The prizes are funded by the Sir John Hicks Foundation, named after the Oxford economist who was the first British recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

Who can apply

  • University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
  • Degree level: You are a first-year student.
  • Field of study: You are enrolled on the Economics and Management (E&M) degree programme.
  • Grades: You achieved by far the best result in your year group in microeconomics, macroeconomics or quantitative economics in the final examinations (Final Honour School).
  • Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. Age and financial need are not taken into account.

How to apply

There is no application process. The Department of Economics selects the winners based on their final examination results and announces their names in August.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an award based on academic achievement, for which you do not need to apply. Only the top student in each of the three subjects wins, so you’ll be competing against the entire E&M year group. You don’t need to submit anything, so your chances depend entirely on your exam results.
