Faculty of Philosophy, University of Oxford - John Locke Prize in Mental Philosophy

Benefit

The John Locke Prize recognises outstanding achievements in the philosophy of mind, the study of the mind, thought and perception. The first prize is worth about 350 EUR (GBP 300), or more, subject to available funds. A smaller second prize (Proxime Accessit) of approximately 115 EUR (100 GBP) may also be awarded. The prize is funded from a fund bequeathed by Henry Wilde and administered by the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. Please note: No assessment for the prize has taken place since 2008, and the rules are currently being revised, so there is no open call for applications at present.

Eligibility

• University: You are studying at the University of Oxford.
• Degree stage: You have passed all the exams for the Bachelor of Arts degree at Oxford, or you are currently undertaking (or have already completed) a postgraduate programme at Oxford.
• Field: Your entry falls within the field of the philosophy of mind.
• Timing: You must sit the examination no later than the tenth semester following your Bachelor’s examinations or following your enrolment as a Master’s student.
• One-time rule: You can only win the prize once.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at Oxford.

How realistic are your chances?

There is currently no open round taking place: no exam has been held since 2008, and the prize is currently under review. You cannot apply at present. Should the competition resume, only philosophy students from Oxford will be eligible to take part, so the pool of participants is small.
