What the Nicholas Kurti Technical Prize gives you

You are to receive a one-off award of about 470 EUR (£400) for outstanding technical achievements in the field of solid-state physics. This field of study deals with solids and liquids, as well as the behaviour of their atoms and electrons, for example in superconductors, magnets and semiconductors. The prize is awarded annually by the Department of Physics at the University of Oxford. It is named after Nicholas Kurti, a physicist renowned for his research into low-temperature physics at the Clarendon Laboratory in Oxford.

How to apply

There is no separate application process or deadline. The department awards the prize each year within the Solid State Physics Working Group on the basis of the work you have already carried out.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single internal award restricted to students of solid-state physics in a specific department at the University of Oxford; the pool of eligible candidates is therefore small. Direct applications are not accepted. The prize is awarded for work already completed; the surest way to be considered is therefore to achieve compelling academic results in your research. If your work stands out in this particular field, you have a genuine chance of winning.
