Adult Dependants' Grant

You will receive up to 3,545 GBP per year (about 4,100 EUR) if, as a student, you are supporting another adult who is financially dependent on you. The amount depends on your household income, so you will receive less as your income rises. You do not have to repay this amount. It is awarded in addition to your student loans and paid out in three instalments throughout the academic year. This is a government grant from ‘Student Finance England’, the UK agency that provides financial support to students in England; it is therefore not tied to any specific higher education institution. You must reapply for the grant each academic year.

Who can apply

• Level: You are studying for a full-time Bachelor’s degree or a teacher training qualification, such as a PGCE.
• Where you study: You are permanently resident in England.
• Subject: Open to all degree programmes.
• Nationality: Open to all nationalities, provided you meet the requirements for a permanent residence permit in England with regard to funding your studies.
• Other funding: You have applied for, or are already receiving, means-tested funding from Student Finance England. If you are awarded a loan for postgraduate study, you will not be eligible for this funding.
• Household income: Your household income (your own taxable income plus the income of those living with you) is no more than 15,835.98 GBP. The full grant is awarded to households with an income of no more than 8,746 GBP.
• The adult you support: Usually a husband, wife, partner or civil partner. They cannot be your child, cannot earn more than 3,796 GBP a year, and cannot get student finance themselves. If you are under 25, a partner only counts if you are married or in a civil partnership.

How to apply

You apply for the grant online via the UK Government’s Student Finance Service. It takes around four weeks to process. You must reapply every year that you are enrolled on the course.
