Part-time Fee Grant (PTFG)

This grant covers your tuition fees for a part-time bachelor’s degree programme. The Students Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) pays it directly to your university. The amount depends on how many credits you are studying and is calculated on a pro rata basis. For a degree programme at Bachelor’s level, you can receive up to approximately 1,820 GBP (about 2,124 EUR) per year. For HNC/HND programmes, the amount is lower (around 1,274 GBP, approx. 1,480 EUR); with some private providers, it is even lower. SAAS only covers the costs for the minimum number of credits you need to obtain your qualification, and you must submit a new application each year. This is a Scottish Government scheme for people who are not eligible for a student loan or grant because they are studying part-time.

Who can apply

• Where you live: You usually live in Scotland and meet the SAAS residence requirements.
• Course: You are undertaking a recognised part-time or distance-learning programme at undergraduate level at SCQF levels 7 to 10 (the Scottish Qualifications Framework for higher education qualifications) and are earning between 30 and 119 credits per year.
• Income: You earn 25,000 GBP (approximately 29,100 EUR) per year or less before tax, including bonuses, additional benefits and overtime.
• Education so far: You have completed your full-time compulsory education, e.g. secondary school.
• Field of study: Any subject is eligible, with the exception of degree programmes for university graduates and part-time programmes in the fields of paramedicine, nursing and midwifery.
• No double funding: You cannot receive a student loan, a scholarship or funding under a government training programme at the same time.

How to apply

Apply for the grant online via your SAAS account within 6 months of the start of the course. SAAS will check your course details with your higher education institution and, if your application is approved, will send you a letter of approval.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a merit-based scholarship, but a means-tested entitlement. If you meet the eligibility criteria regarding residence, income and course of study, you will receive the funding. There is no selection panel that you need to impress. Pay particular attention to the income threshold of 25,000 GBP and the application deadline. Apply as early as possible and finalise your credit points total before the deadline, as adding credit points after the deadline will not result in an increase in the grant.
