Care Leavers Bursary at Manchester Metropolitan University

You will receive about 1,150 EUR (£1,000) per year per academic year at Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester Met), for up to 3 years. The amount is paid directly to you and does not need to be repaid. As a student with care experience, you’ll also receive additional support: a dedicated inclusion team acting as a central point of contact, priority access to student accommodation available throughout the year, help with your deposit, and advice before you start your studies and on your career path.

Who can apply

• Care background: You were in state care and the body responsible for funding your studies recognises you as a former care leaver (Student Finance England, Wales, Northern Ireland or SAAS in Scotland).
• Degree level: You are enrolled on a full-time bachelor’s degree programme. Part-time programmes, online programmes, postgraduate programmes, PGCE programmes and work-related programmes are not taken into account.
• Where you study: You’re studying at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK.
• Fee status: You are a student subject to ‘domestic’ tuition fees. Students from the EU and other international students are not eligible to apply.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The university will automatically check your eligibility based on the information provided by your funding body. Just make sure you have indicated your status as a former resident of a children’s home when applying for student finance, so that this is noted in your records.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very narrowly defined: it is aimed exclusively at UK students from within the UK who are enrolled at a university and are officially recognised as former children in care, meaning that very few people meet the eligibility criteria. If you meet these criteria, you do not need to apply for one of the limited number of places. All those eligible will receive funding. The key requirement is that your status as a former child in care is confirmed in your application for student finance.
