Murray Edwards College - Financial Hardship Bursary

What you get

You will receive a one-off grant of around 250 GBP (about 290 EUR), and occasionally a larger amount, should you find yourself in financial difficulty whilst studying at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge. The College will assess your situation and provide you with financial support to help you get through this period. The money may also cover exceptional academic costs, such as specialist equipment, additional courses or research for your dissertation. Murray Edwards is a women’s college in Cambridge; therefore, the fund is intended for its female students.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are an undergraduate student at Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge.
• Financial need: You can prove that you are in genuine financial hardship. You have already applied for all other forms of financial support, as well as the maximum student loans to which you are entitled.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Nationality: You are a British citizen.
• Fee status: Your status is ‘Home fee’.

How to apply

First, speak to your tutor. Everything will be treated in confidence. Your application will then be forwarded to the college’s Student Finance Committee, which will decide whether to grant the funding. There is no fixed deadline, so you can submit your application as soon as you find yourself in financial difficulty.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund has very strict eligibility criteria. You must already be studying at Murray Edwards College and demonstrate genuine financial hardship; as a result, very few people apply for it. If you can provide evidence of your hardship and have already applied for other grants and loans, your chances are good. The fund is intended to support students in need, not to reward a competition; therefore, what counts most is a clear and honest account of your situation.
