Foundation Year Bursary at the University of Manchester

During your foundation year at the University of Manchester, you will receive a grant of up to 4,600 EUR per year (£4,000). A foundation year is the integrated first year of study that prepares you for a standard degree programme. The exact amount depends on your family income:

• Household income up to £25,000: You will receive £4,000 per year (approximately 4,600 EUR).
• Household income between £25,001 and £35,000: You will receive £2,000 per year (approximately 2,300 EUR).

The amount will be paid out in three instalments over the course of the year and does not need to be repaid. It replaces the standard Manchester scholarship, to which students in the foundation year are not entitled. As soon as you progress to the main degree programme, you will receive this scholarship, provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria.

Who can apply

• Course: You are enrolled on a first-year degree programme at the University of Manchester. Any subject is eligible, for example engineering, materials science or mathematics.
• Fee status: You are a student from the UK (paying domestic fees).
• Family income: Your household income, after deductions, is £35,000 or less.
• Income check: Student Finance England has calculated your household income, and you have agreed to share this information with the university.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The university automatically checks all students during the first 6 to 8 weeks of the semester and will notify you by email in November if you meet the eligibility criteria. Make sure you complete your means test with Student Finance by 31 May of the relevant academic year, otherwise you will lose your grant for that year.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant is not subject to a selection process. If you are a British student on a foundation year in Manchester and your household income is £35,000 or below, you will receive the grant automatically, without an interview or selection process. The only thing that could throw a spanner in the works is the paperwork. So make sure you complete your income assessment with Student Finance well in advance of the deadline on 31 May.
