About this scholarship

What the Cardiff Met Sports Scholarship gives you

You will receive a scholarship in the form of a cash payment to help you study and train as a top-level athlete at the same time. A bachelor’s student in the UK receives around 3,450 euros (£3,000) in the first year, and then around 2,300 euros (£2,000). This amounts to a total of around 8,000 euros (£7,000) over the entire three-year degree programme. International undergraduate students receive more: around 5,750 euros in the first year (£5,000) and around 3,450 euros (£3,000) in each subsequent year. Funding for postgraduate programmes is awarded as a one-off payment: around 4,850 euros (£4,200) for a UK Master’s programme or around 5,750 euros (£5,000) if you are from abroad. Cardiff Met graduates receive around 2,300 euros (£2,000) as well as a reduction in tuition fees. Cardiff Metropolitan University in Wales pays out the amount and confirms it for the entire duration of your studies, but reviews your funding each year. You may also qualify for admission with grades up to two grades below the standard requirements.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are starting a new degree programme at Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK. This also includes students who are currently continuing their studies and moving on to a postgraduate programme.
  • Study level: You are a student on an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.
  • Field of study: Any subject.
  • Nationality: Anyone can apply. This sports scholarship is open to both international and British students.
  • Sporting level: You take part in national or international competitions in your sport. For sports in the University Sports League (BUCS), this means that you are competing for medals or playing at national league level.

How to apply

If Cardiff Met offers a high-performance programme for your sport (e.g. athletics, rugby, football, hockey, netball, cricket, basketball, tennis or triathlon), the coaches will select scholarship recipients themselves during the recruitment process, so no separate form is required. For all other sports, please complete an online application form. Applications are assessed in several rounds with deadlines in December, January, April, May and July, and final decisions are made by July.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is intended exclusively for serious competitive athletes; therefore, it is restricted to students who take part in competitions at national or international level – not the student body as a whole. If you clearly meet this standard and practise a sport offered by the university, your chances are good. Whilst meeting the criteria does not guarantee acceptance, a convincing, documented track record of competition results is an advantage, as is applying early.
