About this scholarship
Imperial Bursary
You will receive up to about EUR 600 per month (up to £5,000 a year), which is paid out for each academic year and does not need to be repaid. The exact amount depends on your household income: around £5,000 per year if your family income is £16,000 or less, and then less as your income rises towards £70,000,, down to around £1,000.. You are free to use the money as you wish, whether for food, rent or other expenses. It is awarded in addition to a government student loan and is not deducted from it. You will receive it in monthly instalments or, alternatively, can choose to have it applied as a waiver of your rent or tuition fees. If you were in care as a child or have no family support, you will receive an additional £500 per year, up to around £5,500.. The grant is awarded by Imperial College London.
Who can apply
- University: You’re studying at Imperial College London.
- Level: You are a Bachelor’s student and are working towards your first academic degree. If you already hold a Bachelor’s degree, you are not eligible to apply, with the exception of the ‘Graduate Entry Medicine’ programme and the 5 and 6 years of the MBBS programme.
- Fee status: You pay tuition fees at the home rate. This means that you are resident in the UK and are not an international student.
- Financial need: Your annual household income is less than £70,000.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Loan application: You must apply for a means-tested government loan, such as a maintenance loan from Student Finance England. This allows Imperial College to check your income. You must submit the application even if you do not intend to draw down the loan funds.
How to apply
There is no separate form. You apply for the means-tested government loan through your regional funding agency and ask them to forward your income details to Imperial. Your household income must be received by Imperial by 31 May of the academic year. The college will then notify you of the amount by email, usually after your A-level results have been announced.
How realistic are your chances?
This scholarship is not subject to a selection process. If you are a home undergraduate student at Imperial College and your household income is below £70,000,, you are automatically eligible each year. All you need to do is apply for the means-tested loan and submit proof of your income to Imperial College by the deadline on 31 May.
