Sheffield Hallam University - Performance Athletes Support Programme

What you get

Sheffield Hallam University offers a support package for talented student athletes. Up to 30 athletes will receive a scholarship (a grant that you do not have to repay) of 1,000 GBP (about 1,150 EUR) for one year, as well as at least 350 GBP (approximately 400 EUR) to cover sport-related costs. All admitted students receive personalised support from sports specialists: physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training, sports nutrition, sports psychology, as well as advice on personal development and lifestyle. You can also tailor your studies to fit around your training. You’ll receive a free ‘Team Hallam’ membership, giving you access to sports facilities, group workshops and branded sportswear. Sheffield Hallam University funds the programme, which runs for 12 months. It does not renew automatically, so you’ll need to reapply for a further year.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at Sheffield Hallam University for the academic year 2026/27.
• Sporting level: You take part in competitions at academy, national or international level, or show great potential for the future in your sport.
• Your sport: You are taking part in competitions in a sport recognised by the Olympic Games, the Paralympics, the Commonwealth Games or BUCS (including BUCS Para Sport). Other sports will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
• Progression: You can outline your progress within a national umbrella organisation or a professional career path.
• Field of study: Anyone interested is welcome to apply.
• Nationality: Students from the UK and abroad are welcome to apply.

How to apply

You must submit an online form containing your personal and sporting details, evidence of your achievements, a personal statement and a letter of recommendation from your coach. There are two application deadlines. Apply from 1 July to 1 September 2026 to start your studies in September 2026, or from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2027 to start your studies in January 2027. Once the application deadline has passed, Sport Hallam will contact your referees and select the athletes internally.

How realistic are your chances?

The funding package is open to all students at Sheffield Hallam University who are seriously involved in competitive sport; however, only 30 places come with a cash grant, so selection for the funded level is very competitive. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee a place. Your prospects are good if you can provide clear evidence of high-level competition or a documented track record of achievement, and submit a compelling application within the application period.
