About this award / prize

Chemistry Gibbs Prize

For the best overall performance in the final examinations in Chemistry at the University of Oxford, you will receive a one-off cash prize of 805 EUR (700 GBP). This is a one-off payment and not a monthly scholarship. Several related chemistry prizes are awarded on the same basis: two prizes for second place (Proxime Accessit), each worth approximately 635 EUR (550 GBP); two book prizes, each worth approximately 345 EUR (300 GBP) and three further prizes of 345 EUR for outstanding achievements in inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. The funds come from a bequest by Charles D. D. Gibbs.

Who can apply

  • University: You’re studying at the University of Oxford.
  • Programme: You are currently studying chemistry at the ‘Final Honour School’, the final examination phase of your Bachelor’s degree.
  • Field of study: Chemistry only.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Results: You’ll get top marks in your coursework and final exams.

How to apply

No application is required. The examiners automatically select the winners on the basis of their academic performance and examination results. In some years, the prize may not be awarded if no candidate is deemed to be of a high enough standard.

How realistic are your chances?

This is an award for the very best chemistry graduates from a university. It is not possible to apply: only the best examination results count, and there is no way to improve one’s chances beyond one’s marks. The pool of candidates is small, but the bar is set high. If you are among the top chemistry students in your year group, one of these prizes is well within your reach.
